Snowbound Christmas Carols
By Mary Matus

I’m sure I not only the one this year that’s very anxious for winter to be over with. It’s no secret that this winter has been particularly bad in the northeast, and in my home state of Pennsylvania. I have to say that we’ve probably been spoiled for that past few years. I remember when I was a kid in the early 80’s there always seemed to be so much snow. The kind that you could almost get lost in, there was so much. Of course, I was shorter back then…

And for the first time in many years (almost 100 according to a local newspaper), we had a snowstorm on Christmas Day. I was a little disappointed I didn’t get to make it to my relatives. (They live just far enough away that I didn’t want to try traveling if I didn’t have to.) Of course, my brain says “people have to travel” and “I hope the roads are clear by the time I go to work tomorrow.” But part of me wanted to go play in the snow while singing “White Christmas.” And it certainly made for a pretty scene.

But while I was stranded, I decided to come up with a few alternate Christmas carols to reflect my experience.

Snow on Christmas Day
(to the tune of Winter Wonderland)

Snow is falling, Wind is blowing
And I guess I am not going
I’ll sit at home, maybe talk on the phone
Watching all the snow on Christmas Day

It’s too bad I’m not a skier
Otherwise I might be there
Instead I’m still here
Trying to keep my Christmas cheer
Watching all the snow on Christmas Day

Christmas Snow
(to the tune of Jingle Bells)

Sitting in the house
Watching all the snow
It’s coming down so fast
I guess I will not go

Christmas certainly is white
I guess I should be glad
But it doesn’t seem quite right
I’m still a little mad

Oh, Christmas snow, Christmas snow
We’re getting Christmas snow
We’ll spend the whole day digging out
Ho, ho, ho, ho, ho!

Alternate Version of White Christmas

I’m dreaming of a White Christmas
But this isn’t quite what I had in mind
A foot of snow has landed
And now I am stranded
I guess I’ll sit at home today

I’m dreaming of a White Christmas
And boy did I ever get my wish
I guess I wanted snow
But how was I to know
There’s be a storm so big on Christmas Day
