The Moo

By Reid Bush

Even many dairy farmers
talk as if a moo is just a moo
and means no more —

the particular cow now in question
stretching forth her neck
and looking out
and upward
toward the sky
with large rolling pond-dark eyes
and mooing loud,

as if so hoping something somewhere
beyond that distant reach of blue
knows what she wants
and will translate her heart to humans,
who seem able to do everything
but hear.
