Butterfly on hand statue

Photographer’s statement

In this photo, a female black swallowtail has just emerged from its chrysalis and is busy drying its wings on a plaster sculpture. The juxtaposition of the butterfly and the life-like hand is at once a haphazard connection and yet, it almost seems to evince a metaphysical allegory.

About

Ansel Oommen is a freelance writer and multimedia artist whose work has appeared in magazines such as Network Ireland, Permaculture, Plant Pictorial, QWERTY, and First Things, among others. As a child, he progressed through several stages, which he fondly refers to as the entomology phase, the ornithology phase, the paleontology phase, and the botany phase, in that order, although there were some overlaps. It’s not that he outgrew birds or dinosaurs, but for some magnetic reason, insects and plants continue to captivate him. He can now catch a fruit fly in midair mantis-style and spot a cabbage white egg in a sea of kohlrabi with the built in macro-photographic vision he has developed over the years.
