What If?

By Darby Diana

What if, one day, all rivers turned around
and, without warning, ran the other way?
What if all flowers, happy in the ground,
found fertile soil had turned to hard-pan clay?

What if the stars resolved to disobey
the rules and suddenly turned off their light?
What if Stygian darkness took the day
in hand and shaped it into lightless night?

What if the mountains suddenly took flight
or sank beneath the valleys and the seas?
What if a wind, not knowing wrong from right,
one day just blew our breath away with ease?

And as I kept on querying "What if,"
life stubbed its toe and tumbled off the cliff.
