In celebration of Wild Violet’s 10th anniversary, we are holding a special reading and celebration. The event will take place at 8 p.m. on Saturday, October 1, at Milkboy Coffee, 2 East Lancaster Ave. (U.S. Highway 30), Ardmore, Pennsylvania. There will be a $5 cover charge.

For those who need to take public transporation, you should plan your trip to arrive at the 30th Street Station in Philadelphia. Then you can catch the regional rail line, the Paoli-Thorndale Line (The schedule can be found at SEPTA.org). Head in the direction of Malvern. Get off at the Ardmore station (This is 5 stops from 30th Street). If the station is closed when you make your return trip, don’t worry: you can buy a ticket on the train. From there, it’s a very short walk to the coffeehouse: Head northwest on Lancaster Ave./U.S. Highway 30 toward Cricket Ave until you reach 2 E. Lancaster Ave., which is on the corner with Cricket Avenue.

If you are driving, there is a municipal parking lot on Cricket Avenue, about one block past Milkboy, on the right.

If you are a prior contributor to Wild Violet and are interested in contributing to the Wild Violet 10th Anniversary book, send your pieces to wildvioletmagazine@yahoo.com. Please put “Anniversary Book” in the subject line. Prose pieces are limited to 2,000 words, and poetry is limited to 30 lines. Artwork and photography will need to be at least 300 dpi for proper reproduction. The deadline is Monday, September 19.

I am working with the management about the possibility of having work from Wild Violet art and photography contributors exhibited throughout the entire month of October (This is the only way they will hang the art). They will, of course, be returned to you following the event. The works need to measure at least 3×5 feet, and we’ll need at least 10 of them total (not per artist). If you are interested, please e-mail me ASAP at wildvioletmagazine@yahoo.com with images of the works you’d like to have displayed. I will let you know when a decision has been made about whether to display the works. (Please e-mail right away, because I have to get those together very soon!)

If you are a Wild Violet contributor from any time over the past 10 years, you’re welcome to read some of your work at the celebration. Please e-mail me to let me know and send me a two-sentence bio to include in the program. After I know how many people will be reading, I’ll let you know how long you will be able to read. Those who are reading will also have the opportunity to sell their books, CDs, etc. Plan to bring change if you expect any sales, because you’ll be responsible for your own sales and change

Those who would like to contribute an item to be used as a door prize, please e-mail me to get the address where you should send them. We hope to have enough prizes so that everyone who attends will receive something. Include a note that states that you’re donating the item as a door prize, so that I don’t confuse it with the art that will be displayed and returned.

Spring is almost here, and I’m kicking off my “blog tour.” Just like a book tour, that means making appearances in other people’s blogs. As an extra incentive, I’m going to hold a contest. Anyone who includes a mention of my book, “The Art of Life,” (with the links below) in his or her blog will be entered into a contest to win a free, autographed copy of my book.

Alyce’s bookstore: http://www.alycewilson.com/books/

Excerpt from the book: http://www.alycewilson.com/2010/11/the-art-of-life-available-now/

Those who make a simple mention will receive one contest entry. Those who do a more extensive entry (such as an interview with me, a longer piece that relates to my book, or a “guest blog entry” written by me) will receive two contest entries. Those who mention me in multiple entries will receive one contest entry per blog entry. I will, of course, give entries to the few people who have interviewed me already.

To enter, post your entry and then share the link with me, either through posting a comment or by sending me a private message (wildvioletmagazine@yahoo.com).

The contest runs until April 30, after which point a winner will be selected randomly. Feel free to also share information about this contest with friends, family, coworkers, or random people you meet on the street.

Thanks and good luck!

Frequent Wild Violet contributor Dean Borok has won the New York Magazine political fiction writing contest, winning a weekend for two at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C.

Dean Borok’s story appears on the magazine’s site.

Here’s what the magazine said about the contest winners in a December 13, 2009 article:

Three weeks ago, we tasked seven writers—Mary Gaitskill, Adam Haslett, and Walter Kirn among them—with inventing scenes from the private lives of figures from the world of politics, from the commander-in-chief himself to Ashley Dupré (“The Political Fictions Project,” November 30). We also asked readers to submit their own short stories starring politicians heroic or pathetic or both. (First prize was a weekend at the Mayflower Hotel, a place Eliot Spitzer is unlikely ever to set foot in again.) The entries were even more eclectic and fantastical than we’d anticipated. Almost all strived for humor, and a large number mixed genres with impressive abandon. In one story, Hillary Clinton, now a grandmotherly president, goes after a band of apocalyptic serial killers. In another, Alec Baldwin becomes mayor of New York. We had CIA operatives enlisting Bernie Madoff, and Bob Woodward revealing Obama’s secret plant hatred. Sarah Palin made many appearances, including one as a vampire determined to drill, baby, drill into Katie Couric’s jugular. But our winner (drumroll, please) is Dean Borok, whose “A Wall Street Christmas Carol!” stars “Tiny Tim Geithner” in what struck us as an appropriate little tale for this holiday. Second place goes to M. W. Donahue’s ““Rear Sunroom,” where Bill Clinton and his handlers toss tennis balls into the backyards of attractive neighbors. And the bronze goes to Matt Sullivan for “Dan Quayle Prepares His Comeback.” (It’s fiction. We promise.) You can read the five other finalists below.
